Marketplace payment solution

Marketplace payments, split per order

Marketplace payments with FractionalPay work like this: the buyer pays once, and every order is divided between the seller, your commission and any delivery or service partner the moment the payment succeeds, with ledger entries and a payout date for each share.

Your checkout and your payment account stay as they are. We add the part a marketplace finance team usually rebuilds in spreadsheets every week: who earned what, what is still owed, and what changes when an order is refunded.

  • Seller, commission and partner shares on every order
  • Refunds reversed across every share, not only the seller
  • Flat monthly plan, no per-transaction fee from us

  • Seller $200.00

One buyer payment, three parties, shares that add up to the cent.

Worked example

A 250 USD order split three ways

A buyer pays 250.00 USD for an order on your marketplace. Your commission is 15 percent of the order, the delivery partner is owed a fixed 12.50 USD for the shipment, and the seller receives what is left. In the rule builder that is one percent line, one fixed line and the seller set as the remainder party.

Fixed lines are applied first, percentages are calculated on the gross amount, and the remainder party absorbs any rounding cent. The result is written once per payment and never recalculated by hand.

  • Seller

    Rule
    Remainder

  • Platform commission

    Share
    $12.50
  • Total

    Rule
    Share
    $250.00

The same order also produces a ledger transaction that balances to zero: the full 250.00 USD sits in your operator balance, 200.00 USD is payable to the seller, 12.50 USD is payable to the delivery partner and 37.50 USD is booked as platform revenue. That is the answer to "how much do we owe whom", available for every order and every seller at any date.

Change the percentages, add a second partner or switch the seller to a fixed fee in the split simulator and see the result without creating an account.

Marketplace payment processing

Three ways to run marketplace payments

Most marketplaces start in one of two places. Engineers build split logic directly on the payment operator's transfer primitives, or finance exports the transactions and works out every seller's share in a spreadsheet. Both work at fifty orders a week. Both get harder with every new seller, partner and refund.

Whichever way you go, the money itself moves on your own platform account at a licensed payment operator. FractionalPay calculates the splits, keeps the ledger and sends payout instructions to that account. It never holds, pools or transmits funds and it is not a payment institution. If you already run on Stripe Connect, the Stripe Connect split payments page shows what you keep and what you stop building.

For the finance lead

Close the week without rebuilding it

The Head of Finance at a two-sided marketplace asks the same three questions every Monday. What did we collect, what do we owe each seller and partner, and does our ledger match what the operator says is in the account. FractionalPay answers the first two per order and the third with a daily reconciliation run.

Mismatches show up as a list with the operator reference and both amounts, not as a gap discovered at month end. Seller payouts follow your schedule, and the details of payout runs, thresholds and failed transfers are on the marketplace payouts page.

  • Balances per seller and partner at any date
  • Every refund and dispute mirrored from your account
  • CSV exports of the ledger and of every payout

Refunds on marketplace orders

A partial refund on the same order

The buyer returns part of the order and you refund 50.00 USD. A spreadsheet usually takes the whole amount from the seller and forgets your commission and the delivery fee. FractionalPay reverses the refund in proportion to each original share by default, or platform first if your rule says so.

A 50 USD refund on the 250 USD order, reversed proportionally

  • Seller

    Original
    $200.00
    Reversed
    -$40.00
    After refund
    $160.00
  • Platform commission

    Original
    $37.50
    Reversed
    -$7.50
    After refund
    $30.00
  • Delivery partner

    Original

    Reversed
    -$2.50
    After refund

  • Total

    Original
    $250.00
    Reversed
    -$50.00
    After refund
    $200.00

The seller carries 80 percent of the refund because they received 80 percent of the order. Your commission gives back its 15 percent and the delivery partner its 5 percent, so nobody is out of pocket for someone else's share.

If the seller was already paid, the 40.00 USD becomes a negative balance that is netted against their next payout, with ledger entries for each step. Disputes follow the same path. You can test a refund on any amount in the simulator with the refund slider.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Something else on your mind? Write to [email protected] or read the API documentation.

Do we need a new payment processor for marketplace payments?
No. You keep your own platform account at your payment operator and connect it to FractionalPay. Buyers pay into that account exactly as today, and we read the payments, refunds and disputes from it to calculate each split.
Does FractionalPay hold seller money?
No. Funds stay in your own account at a licensed payment operator. FractionalPay calculates the splits, keeps the ledger and sends payout instructions to that account. We never hold, pool or transmit funds and we are not a payment institution.
Can one marketplace use different commissions per category?
Yes. Each rule matches on product or on a metadata key and value, with a priority. A furniture rule can take 12 percent and a services rule 20 percent, and the rule version is stored with every split so history stays readable.
How do sellers get onboarded?
Each seller is a beneficiary linked to their connected account id at your operator. You create them in the dashboard, import them from CSV or call POST /beneficiaries from your own onboarding flow. See the API docs.
Is there a fee per order or per payout?
No fee from us. You pay a flat monthly plan with a split flow limit, and your operator's own processing and payout fees stay as they are.
Can our finance team use it without engineers?
Yes. Rules, sellers, payout schedules and exports are managed in the dashboard. Engineers can use the API and webhooks later, for example to create sellers automatically.
