Stripe Connect fees for a US marketplace come in two layers. Card processing is 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful charge, and when your platform handles pricing for sellers, Connect adds 2 USD per monthly active account and 0.25% plus 25 cents per payout. On a typical marketplace those two layers land near 4% of gross order value, which is roughly a quarter of a 15% take rate.

Most founders see the 2.9% on day one and only meet the rest of the fee schedule on the first month-end invoice. The account fee, the payout fee, instant payouts, international cards and disputes all show up as separate lines, and none of them are visible at checkout. Below is the full US fee schedule for Connect, who actually pays each line, and a worked example you can copy with your own numbers.

Stripe Connect fees for marketplaces at a glance

These are Stripe's standard US rates for a platform that handles pricing for its connected accounts, which is the setup almost every marketplace with Express or Custom accounts uses. Volume discounts exist, but you only get them by negotiating with Stripe sales.

Stripe Connect fee schedule for US marketplaces
FeeStandard US rateWhen it is charged
Card processing2.9% + 30 centsEvery successful card charge
Monthly active account2 USD per accountEach month a connected account receives a payout
Payout fee0.25% + 25 centsEvery payout sent to a seller's bank account or debit card
Instant Payouts1% of the payoutWhen a seller takes money out instantly instead of on the standard schedule
International cards+1.5%Charges on cards issued outside the US
Currency conversion+1%When a charge or payout needs a conversion
Disputes15 USD per disputeEach chargeback a buyer opens

If you let Stripe handle pricing instead, the platform pays no Connect fees at all. The catch is that your sellers then pay Stripe directly and see Stripe's pricing, and you give up control over the fee you show them. Marketplaces that want one consistent seller fee and their own application fee almost always end up on the platform-handles-pricing side.

Who pays the Stripe fees on a marketplace

With destination charges or separate charges and transfers, the charge happens on your platform account, so Stripe takes its processing fee from your balance, not from the seller's. Stripe's own marketplace guide says it plainly: the marketplace is responsible for Stripe fees and for negative balances on connected accounts. You recover the cost through the application fee you keep from each order.

That has a practical consequence. Every fee in the table above comes out of your take rate unless you price it in. If you keep 15% of a 60 USD order, that is 9 USD, and Stripe has already taken 2.04 USD of the 60 in processing before any payout fee. Your real margin on that order is about 11.6%.

How much does Stripe Connect cost per month?

For a platform that handles pricing, Stripe Connect costs 2 USD for every connected account that receives a payout that month, plus 0.25% and 25 cents on each payout, on top of normal card processing. A marketplace paying 300 sellers once a month on 204,000 USD of payouts pays about 1,185 USD in Connect fees.

Is Stripe Connect free?

Only when Stripe handles pricing and your sellers pay Stripe directly. In that model there are no Connect fees for the platform. In the model most marketplaces use, where the platform sets seller pricing, Connect adds the account and payout fees on top of card processing, so it is not free.

Does Stripe Connect charge per payout?

Yes, when your platform handles pricing. Each payout to a seller's bank account or debit card costs 0.25% of the amount plus 25 cents, and Instant Payouts add 1% of the payout. This is why payout frequency matters: four weekly payouts to the same seller cost four times the fixed 25 cents of one monthly payout.

A worked example with real marketplace numbers

Take a US marketplace for handmade goods. It processes 4,000 orders a month at an average of 60 USD, so 240,000 USD in gross order value. It keeps 15% and pays the other 85% to 300 active sellers. Here is what Stripe charges in a month, first with weekly payouts and then with monthly ones.

Monthly Stripe Connect cost for a marketplace with 240,000 USD in orders
LineWeekly payoutsMonthly payouts
Card processing, 2.9% of 240,000 USD plus 4,000 x 30 cents$8,160.00$8,160.00
Active accounts, 300 x 2 USD$600.00$600.00
Payout percentage, 0.25% of 204,000 USD$510.00$510.00
Payout fixed fee, 1,200 or 300 payouts x 25 cents$300.00$75.00
Total Stripe cost$9,570.00$9,345.00
Share of the 36,000 USD platform take26.6%26.0%

Two things stand out. First, card processing is about 87% of the bill, so payout settings will never fix a margin problem on their own. Second, the payout schedule is still worth 225 USD a month here, which is 2,700 USD a year for changing one setting. Most marketplaces settle on weekly payouts with a minimum balance, so small sellers roll into the next week instead of triggering a 25 cent payout for 8 USD. We go through those trade-offs in marketplace payouts.

Now add instant payouts. If 50 sellers pull 40,000 USD out instantly each month, Stripe adds 1% of that, another 400 USD. Many platforms pass this fee to the seller, which is fair, but it only works if your ledger records the fee against the right seller.

Fees that catch marketplaces by surprise

The fee schedule is public. What hurts is how the lines interact with refunds, disputes and cross-border buyers once you have hundreds of sellers.

  • Refunds do not return the processing fee. When a buyer gets a refund, Stripe keeps the original 2.9% plus 30 cents. If your split code reverses the seller's share and your fee in full, the platform quietly absorbs the processing cost on every refund.
  • Disputes cost 15 USD each in the US. On a 60 USD order that is a quarter of the order value. Marketplaces with a dispute problem usually add chargeback prevention before they touch any other fee.
  • International cards add 1.5%. A buyer in Canada paying with a Canadian card costs 4.4% plus 30 cents instead of 2.9%. If 10% of your orders come from abroad, budget for it.
  • Negative balances are yours. If a seller was paid and the buyer then disputes, Stripe recovers the money from the platform. You recover it from the seller's future earnings, if there are any.
  • Accounts count on any payout. A seller who makes one 12 USD sale and gets paid that month costs the full 2 USD account fee. Minimum payout thresholds keep occasional sellers from becoming active every month.

How to set your application fee so the platform keeps its margin

Start from the net margin you want, not the headline take rate. If you want to keep 11% of every order after Stripe, add up what Stripe takes as a share of order value. In the example above that is 9,345 USD on 240,000 USD, or 3.9%. Your take rate needs to be about 14.9% to net 11%, so the 15% the founder picked is right, but only just.

Then decide who carries each variable fee. A common US setup looks like this:

  • The platform absorbs card processing and the monthly account fee, because sellers expect a single clean commission.
  • Sellers pay for Instant Payouts, shown as a 1% fee at the moment they request one.
  • Refunds reverse the seller's share and the platform's fee in proportion, and a refund after the return window can deduct the lost processing fee from the seller's share, if your seller terms allow it.
  • Disputes are deducted from the seller's balance when the seller lost the dispute through their own fault, such as an item that never shipped.

The rules are simple to write down. The hard part is applying them to every order, refund and dispute without a spreadsheet. That is the job of the split layer.

Where a split layer fits in the cost

Stripe gives you the rails: charges, transfers to connected accounts and payouts. It does not decide that 85% of order 61407 belongs to the seller, that 5% goes to the referral partner, or that half the order was refunded three weeks later after the seller was paid. That logic either lives in your code or in a tool built for it.

FractionalPay is that tool for platforms on Stripe. It splits each payment by rule, reverses every share in proportion on refunds and disputes, keeps a double-entry ledger per seller and sends payouts through your own Stripe account. It charges a flat 199, 499 or 1,499 USD per month, or half that billed yearly, with no transaction fee and no payout fee on top of Stripe's. Plans and limits are on the pricing page, and you can see the setup in detail on Stripe split payments.

If you are still deciding whether to pay sellers through Stripe at all, compare the per-payout cost with a dedicated payout tool. Our Dots payouts alternative page runs the same math for a payout-only setup, and the split payment software comparison covers Adyen, Finix and Mangopay. For finance teams, the daily match between the ledger and Stripe balance transactions is on payment reconciliation software.

Checklist before you sign up for Connect pricing

  1. Count the sellers who get paid in an average month. That number times 2 USD is your floor for Connect fees.
  2. Pick a payout schedule and a minimum payout amount, then count payouts per month.
  3. Estimate the share of international cards and instant payouts from your current data.
  4. Write down who pays each fee in your seller terms before launch, not after the first dispute.
  5. Ask Stripe sales about volume pricing once you pass a few hundred thousand USD a month in card volume.
  6. Run one real order through the split simulator to see the shares, ledger lines and first payout date.
