The best split payment software for a US marketplace is the one that runs on the payment account you already collect with. If checkout is on Stripe, that means Stripe Connect plus a rules and ledger layer such as FractionalPay marketplace payments. If you are choosing a processor from scratch, Adyen for Platforms and Finix are the main alternatives, and payout tools like Hyperwallet or Tipalti only cover the last step.

Most marketplace teams start shopping for split payment software after the same few weeks. Refunds arrive after sellers were paid, an affiliate asks why their commission dropped, and finance discovers that the split logic lives in three places: a checkout webhook, a spreadsheet and somebody's memory. The options below are the ones US platforms actually shortlist, with what each one is built for, what it costs where pricing is public, and where it falls short.

The tools fall into three groups. Processors that collect the card payment and can divide it. Layers that sit on a processor and handle rules, ledger and payouts. Payout tools that only send money out once you already know the amounts.

Stripe Connect on its own

Stripe Connect is where most US marketplaces start, and for a simple model it is enough. A buyer pays, you keep an application fee, and the rest goes to one seller's connected account. Stripe lists 2 USD per monthly active account and 0.25% plus 25 cents per payout when the platform handles pricing, with instant payouts at 1% of the payout amount.

It gets hard when one payment has more than two parties. A booking that pays a host, a cleaner and a referral partner needs separate transfers, and a partial refund needs each of those reversed in the right proportion, even when one share was already paid out. Stripe gives you the primitives. Deciding the amounts and keeping a record that balances is left to your engineers.

Stripe Connect with a split and ledger layer

This is the option FractionalPay is built for, so read this section with that in mind. You keep Stripe as the processor and the place where money sits. FractionalPay reads every charge, refund and dispute from your Stripe platform account, applies your split rule, writes a double-entry ledger and sends payout instructions back to Stripe on your schedule.

On a 420 USD order with an 85% seller share, a 12% platform fee and a 3% affiliate commission, the ledger records 357.00, 50.40 and 12.60 USD, and those three lines always add up to the charge. If the buyer gets 84 USD back, each share is reduced by 20%, and a seller who was already paid has the difference netted from their next payout. You can see how one payment moves from checkout to payout in how split payments work for marketplaces.

Pricing is flat: 199, 499 or 1,499 USD per month, or half that billed yearly, with monthly split flow limits of 100,000, 1,000,000 and 10,000,000 USD. There is no transaction fee from us, and Stripe's own fees stay as they are. FractionalPay never holds or transmits funds. The limit is the reverse of the benefit: if you are not on Stripe, it does not help you yet.

Adyen for Platforms

Adyen for Platforms is a strong choice for large marketplaces that want one processor across many countries and in-person payments. Split instructions travel with each payment and refund, so the processor itself divides the money. Pricing is negotiated, onboarding goes through sales, and the integration is substantial. Teams processing tens of millions a year often find that worth it. Smaller platforms usually find the setup heavier than the problem.

Finix

Finix is a US processor aimed at software platforms that want to become a payment facilitator or own more of the payment economics. Its documentation describes split transactions and per-transaction fees through its transfers API. Pricing is interchange-plus or blended and quoted by sales. Finix makes sense when payments revenue is a core part of your business model, not only a cost of running the marketplace.

Mangopay

Mangopay is built around wallets: each seller gets an e-wallet, buyer payments land there, and money moves between wallets before payout. That model suits platforms that need escrow-style holds. It is mostly used by European marketplaces, pricing is custom, and US platforms should confirm eligibility and US terms directly before planning around it.

Payout tools are not split payment software

Hyperwallet (now sold by PayPal as Enterprise Payouts), Tipalti and Trolley come up in every search for marketplace payouts. They are good at sending money to many recipients in many countries and at collecting tax forms. None of them decides who earned what from an order. You arrive with the amounts, they send them. If that is the only gap in your stack, a payout tool is the right purchase. If the gap is the split itself, compare them in detail on our Hyperwallet alternatives and Tipalti alternative pages.

How to choose split payment software for a US marketplace

Five questions settle most decisions faster than a feature list.

  1. Where do buyers pay today? Changing processors is a project measured in months. A layer that runs on your current processor is measured in days.
  2. How many parties share a typical order? Two parties fit an application fee. Three or more, or shares that change by product or partner, need real rules.
  3. How often do refunds arrive after payout? If the answer is weekly, proportional reversal and netting against the next payout matter more than any other feature.
  4. Who has to explain a payout? If finance answers seller tickets, you need a ledger that shows each share next to the order it came from, not only a list of transfers.
  5. What does finance reconcile against? Daily matching of charges, fees and payouts at the processor saves the month-end hunt. Your controller will still tie the payouts to the bank, and dedicated software for matching payouts against the bank statement handles that last step.

What split payment software costs

Costs come in three layers, and comparisons go wrong when people price only one of them. First, processing: card fees on every payment, usually 2.9% plus 30 cents on standard US card pricing, or negotiated rates at volume. Second, platform fees from the processor, such as Stripe's per-active-account and per-payout fees. Third, the split and payout software itself, which is either a flat subscription, a per-transfer fee or a negotiated contract.

For a marketplace paying 500 sellers a month on Stripe, the Connect fees for accounts and payouts are knowable in advance, and a flat rules and ledger layer adds a fixed 199 or 499 USD. The cost that rarely shows up in comparisons is engineering time spent maintaining homegrown split code and finance time spent reconciling it. Full plan limits are on the pricing page.

Which split payment software is best for a small marketplace?

For a small US marketplace already on Stripe, Stripe Connect with a flat-priced rules and ledger layer is usually the best fit, because it needs no processor migration and no sales contract. If every order has only one seller and one platform fee and refunds are rare, Stripe Connect on its own can be enough until those conditions change.

Can Stripe split payments between multiple accounts?

Yes. With separate charges and transfers, one Stripe payment can be divided into transfers to several connected accounts. Stripe moves the money, but your platform decides each amount, links the transfers to the charge and reverses them on refunds. A split layer such as FractionalPay does that calculation and record keeping for you. See Stripe Connect split payments.

Do I need split payment software if I use a payout tool?

Usually yes, if one order is shared by several parties. Payout tools send amounts you already calculated, so the split, the refund reversal and the ledger still have to live somewhere. Many teams keep the payout tool for international or tax-heavy recipients and use split software for the calculation and the record.

The fastest way to compare is to run a real order through each candidate. The split simulator on our homepage takes an amount and up to six parties and shows the shares, ledger lines and payout dates without an account, so you can test your own model before you talk to any vendor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best split payment software for a marketplace?
For a US marketplace that already collects on Stripe, Stripe Connect plus a rules and ledger layer such as FractionalPay is usually the best fit. Platforms choosing a processor from scratch compare Adyen for Platforms and Finix, while Hyperwallet, Tipalti and Trolley only send payouts.
How much does split payment software cost?
Expect three layers: card processing, processor platform fees such as Stripe Connect's 2 USD per active account and 0.25% plus 25 cents per payout, and the split software itself. FractionalPay is a flat 199, 499 or 1,499 USD per month with no transaction fee.
Can Stripe split payments between multiple accounts?
Yes. With separate charges and transfers, one payment can be divided into transfers to several connected accounts, but your platform calculates each amount and reverses them on refunds. A split layer such as FractionalPay handles that calculation and the ledger.
Is a payout tool the same as split payment software?
No. Payout tools such as Hyperwallet, Tipalti and Trolley send amounts you already calculated. Split payment software decides each party's share of an order, reverses shares on refunds and keeps the ledger.
